350.org monthly call: Organizing in Rural and Conservative Areas

December 12, 2018 @ 5:00 pm - 6:00 pm

We live in a time of deep polarization in the US, and one of the ways this manifests is the urban-rural divide. Of course climate change is affecting everyone, and rural populations face elevated risks for certain impacts such as drought, and may be more vulnerable when climate catastrophe strikes. Organizing in rural areas presents unique challenges and is often necessary when resisting pipelines or other remote fossil fuel infrastructure.

On Wednesday’s call Maeve McBride, Candy Jones, Julia Williams, Amy Gray, and others from 350 Vermont and 350 Colorado will share their experiences of effective (and ineffective!) strategies for organizing in rural and more-red-than-blue areas.

The call will:

– Provide inspiration, tips and practical ideas for how local groups can better engage people in rural, more isolated areas
– Provide strategies to find common ground in typically conservative areas
– Highlight stories of rural organizing both within the 350 network and from other organizations
– Consider whether there is interest in forming an ongoing 350 working group to focus on this topic

There will be time for discussion and Q&A, so come prepared to share your own experiences. Any members of your local 350 group are welcome to join the call, so please spread the word!

You can register here to join the call. You’ll get an email from Zoom with information about how to join via video conference or phone. If you’ve joined a previous monthly call, you do not need to register again.
