Action Alert: Support Declarations of Climate Emergency in Bingen and White Salmon

November 3, 2020 - November 4, 2020

Help make Bingen and White Salmon climate action leaders in the Gorge!

The Columbia Gorge Climate Action Network (CGCAN) and Community Upcycle of White Salmon have been working hard to get the cities of White Salmon and Bingen to adopt climate emergency resolutions, and now we’re asked for your help. Please send letters of support for these resolutions to the Bingen and White Salmon city councils, and consider attending the meetings via zoom. Your voice in support of these resolutions is an important first step in preparing our Gorge communities for impending climate impacts.

Tomorrow, November 3rd, the City of Bingen has agreed to hear climate emergency resolution presentations from Community Upcycle and CGCAN.

What: Bingen City Council Meeting on Climate Emergency Resolution
When: Tuesday, November 3 at 7:00 p.m.
Where: Agenda and Zoom info can be found here.

Public comments will not be taken during the meeting, so please submit an online comment today using the link above. Email Bingen City Council

White Salmon will be considering their own resolution at their next city council meeting on Wednesday.

What: White Salmon City Council Meeting on Climate Emergency Resolution
When: Wednesday, November 4 at 6:00 p.m.
Where: Agenda and Zoom info can be found here.

Public comment will not be taken during the teleconference. Public comment submitted by 5:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 4 will be read during the city council meeting and forwarded to all city council members. Email White Salmon City Council

At the November 4 White Salmon city council meeting, the council will consider a “Resolution Declaring a Climate Emergency and Cost-Saving Action Plan” that will include transitioning city vehicles to electric power, updating building codes, and expanding pedestrian/bicycle infrastructure. You can read the entire resolution on the Community Upcycle website along with an excellent sideshow explaining the need for the resolution.

Community Upcycle of White Salmon and Columbia Gorge Climate Action Network (CGCAN) helped with the preparation of the  White Salmon resolution. If successful, White Salmon and Bingen will be the second and third cities in the Gorge to declare a Climate Emergency following Hood River’s resolution last November which was initiated by CGCAN and the Hood River High School Earth Action Club. You can read the text of the Hood River resolution as well as this brochure on the cities environmental sustainability progress. Please contact CGCAN if you want to help pass a Climate Emergency resolution in other Gorge communities! We are building a movement.
