Attorney in Landmark Climate Trial to Speak at Riverside Church

October 14, 2018 @ 12:30 pm - 1:30 pm

Gordon Levitt, a Climate Law Fellow with Our Children’s Trust will speak at Riverside Community Church in downtown Hood River on October 14th.

Levitt is part of the legal team representing 21 young people in a landmark lawsuit against the U.S. government.  The plaintiffs inJuliana v. United States allege that the federal government, through affirmative actions that cause climate change, has violated the youngest generation’s constitutional rights to life, liberty, and property, as well as failed to protect essential public trust resources.

The U.S. government, for more than three years, has vigorously fought to keep the youth’s legal action from going to court.  Most recently, the Trump Administration sought to involve the U.S. Supreme Court.   All such efforts have failed, and the legal action, called by many the “trial of the century.”  is set to begin in U.S. District Court in Eugene on Monday, October 29th.

Levitt will share words of reflection about his involvement in this historic legal action at Riverside’s 10:30 worship service.  From 12:30-1:30 p.m. he will participate in a presentation and discussion about the litigation and ways that members of the public can support the efforts of the young plaintiffs.

Riverside Church, United Church of Christ is located at the corner of 4th and State St. in Hood River.  Both events are free and open to the public.
