Attend and testify about the Climate Crisis Resolution at Hood River City Council

November 12, 2019 @ 6:00 pm - 6:30 pm

On Tuesday, Nov. 12 at 6 PM the Hood River City Council will take public comment on the Climate Crisis Resolution currently before council and may pass/fail the resolution Tuesday night. HRVHS seniors Lottie Bromham and Lyric Emmons  as well as Peter Cornelison and Eric Strid of White Salmon have all testified  in support of the resolution.

Please attend during the public comment period of the meeting, from 6 to 6:30, to support the resolution. We hope that youth will be willing to speak during public comment, 3 minutes each, about this resolution and about their future.

Here is the draft resolution that that was crafted by Councilors Megan Sanders and Tim Counihan, with an introduction to council by City Manager Rachel Fuller. The original resolution suggested by HRVHS and CGCAN is here.

Does the draft resolution lack a sense of urgency? Does it lack what Dr. Martin Luther King called, “the fierce urgency of now”.

“We are now faced with the fact that tomorrow is today. We are confronted with the fierce urgency of now. In this unfolding conundrum of life and history, there “is” such a thing as being too late. This is no time for apathy or complacency. This is a time for vigorous and positive action.”

Does the draft resolution do enough to prepare our city and our citizens for the changes that are coming as a result of climate change? A huge change will be climate refugees, especially with the California fires.   No one else is going to plan this for us, not the feds, not the state, Do we need a City of Hood River Climate Action Plan, or supporting resolution, beyond that of the Hood River County Energy Plan?
